What is your passkey?
Your passkey is the key to your Exa account. It is a cryptographic credential stored securely on your device and backed up to the cloud (iCloud Keychain for Apple or Google Password Manager for Android). Your passkey replaces traditional passwords and gives you full control over your self-custodial account.
Is my passkey backed up automatically?
Yes. When you create your Exa account, your passkey is automatically stored in:
Apple devices: iCloud Keychain (synced across all devices signed into the same Apple ID)
Android devices: Google Password Manager (synced across all devices signed into the same Google account)
As long as you remain signed into your Apple ID or Google account, your passkey is safely backed up in the cloud.
If you are using another passkey and password manager, like Bitwarden or one password, the copy will be stored there.
I changed or upgraded my phone
If you sign in to your new device with the same Apple ID or Google account, your passkeys are automatically transferred. No action is required — just open the Exa App and authenticate as usual.
I lost my phone
If you lost your device but still have access to your Apple ID or Google account:
1. Sign in to your Apple ID or Google account on your new device.
2. Your passkey will sync automatically from the cloud.
3. Open the Exa App and log in normally.
I lost access to both my device and my cloud account
Important: Exa is a self-custodial platform. Your passkey contains the private key that controls your account. If you lose access to both your device and your cloud account (Apple ID or Google account), we cannot recover your passkey or your account.
This is by design — no one, not even Exa, has access to your private key.
Common passkey errors
"Passkey not found" or authentication fails: Make sure you are signed into the same Apple ID or Google account you used when creating your Exa account. If you switched accounts, your passkey may not be available on this device.
"Biometric authentication failed": Ensure Face ID, Touch ID, or your device fingerprint sensor is working correctly. Try restarting your device and attempting again.
Passkey doesn't work after OS update: Some OS updates can temporarily affect passkey access. Restart your device, ensure iCloud Keychain or Google Password Manager sync is enabled, and try again.

Best practices to protect your passkey
Never sign out of your Apple ID or Google account on the device where your passkey is stored.
Enable cloud sync for iCloud Keychain (Apple) or Google Password Manager (Android).
Keep your OS updated to ensure compatibility with the latest passkey standards.
Use the same account across devices so your passkey syncs automatically.
